I'm looking for any extra possible advice towards my first rifle purchase for hunting. I'm leaning towards the Model 750 Woodsmaster, so for a general deer-only hunting rifle would the Model 750 in .243 or .308 be a good cartridge to start with?

Also note: I'm not looking for advice on changing the rifle platform I have chose, just which cartridge would be better suited for a deer hunting round. Thank you.

I shoot a .270 my self but I would recommend the .243 because it shoots nice and flat for long shots but is also good close up. If you want to start taking shots long range at coyotes at some time the .243 is also great for that as well. Good luck.

It depends a lot on the terrain your hunting. I shoot a 30.06 and I've shot ground hogs at 300 yards and it liquifies them. the .243 is a good flat shooting gun but doesn't pack as big of hit as the 308. if your in brushy areas you definitely want to go with the 308. if your out in fields mostly and have long shots the .243 is the way to go. hope this helps a little.
